i found a 1806 five dollar half eagle and need to know what is the best way to clean it or leave it the way it is . ive rinsed it off to get rid of the dirt but i dont know what the black residue is . maybe its the trace of silver being one of the alloys in the makeup of the coin. its 916 and two thirds fine so i assume the rest is silver. i havent tried to clean it other than rinsing it off. this coin is rare being that it is eight over five stars instead of seven over six stars. there were only 64093 of these coins made and only 9000 were the 8 over5 stars. this makes it a rare coin. even being in only good shape its value could be worth up to 5 grand. any help? catbird......

I was taught that if it has real value, it's best not to clean it. If you intend to sell it the buyer can decide to clean it or not to. Just my opinion, but why take the chance.

check with anacs, they will grade and slab "dug" coins, a lot of companies won't

They also will clean them I believe. I know a guy who paid them to professionally clean a 1833 dime for him, here is the site, you can call them

camb1, i hate to disagree but my coin is a half eagle $5 gold heraldic eagle. my coin weighs a little over 8 grams . just double check your figures. i wish it was a quarter eagle , it would be worth a lot more. the coin that you are showing me only weighs 4.37 grams.
