Hi all the last few days ive found 4 coins on farmers fields 2 of them i think are roman and 1 of them a 1690ish william III silver coin and also a 1965 half penny. The silver coin i can see the one side but the other side has worn away so its plain but i can identifiy it. Im not too worried about the half penny as its not worth much its just for my own collection. But the roman coins ive found are really dirty and i cant identifiy them, I can only just feel the bump on one side. Whats the best way for me to clean them? I've been trying to soak them in distilled water and then cleaning them with a toothbrush each day. I've put one of them in a freezer because i read that the water that the dirt soaks up expands when it freezes and cracks the dirt off. If that does.y work im going to try soaking them in olive oil and see if that works.
All i want to do really is see a little bit of the writing and the image on the coin but i guess they might be too corrodded by now .

Wow, great idea I have never heard of soaking then freezing, but logicly it sounds like a very good idea, Not to mention perfectly harmless. I'll check back in on this thread to see how it works out.
There does however come a point where a corroded coin is just not going to be "fixed" no mater the method.
