Harbor Freight offers a hand held metal detector for detecting metal in lumber. Its a wand design. List for $14.99 + s/h. If anybody's used one let me know . I'm thinking about trying one. Thanks SD

| I have one and it is a great pinpointer. It has good sensitivity and better than other pinpointers I have owned. The pinpointer does not have a vibration mode but I seldom used that mode on my other pinpointers. It is worth having at that price even for a backup unit. I use mine all the time now. Since Detectorist discovered this item Harbor freight has had a difficult time keeping them in stock. Buy yours at the store because shipping will cost an extra 7 dollars.

I have also heard some good things about it, and for the price - you can't beat it...

| the hieghbor frieght pin pointer was my first pin pointer and still the one i use. It works well. i have however somehow loosened the end of it so i now have some issues with it. will have to break out the super glue and fix it. i am rough on it though. so its really no surprise its loose. i also use the bullseye 2 from time to time and i really see no difference in the 2 at all. except the bullseye may be built a little bit sturdier. and the hieghbor frieght dosnt have vibrate mode on it, hope this helps.

I just read the HF page about this item and it says that it detects in all directions. So, if I understand this correctly, it will tell you if it is still in the hole, but it won't tell you where it is located in the hole. Is that correct?
Thanks!

OK... I can answer my own question now because I found a Harbor Freight and and bought one.
I found that if I turn the sensitivity way down, I can swing it around in the hole and identify on which side (or bottom) of the hole the item is hiding. I saw another post about sealing the tip, so I am going to do that to make it water-tight.
It is definitely a cheaper-made unit, but cheap is all I can afford at this point.

I bought two of them. One I use and the other is still in the box. I added some Items to mine: Item 1. I went to Ace Hardware store and bought a 5/8" plastic tip and placed it over the end. You get 4 for $ 0.99. Item 2. I got from Ace a small Rubber O Ring and place it over the sens adjustor. It keeps the adjustor from moving after you set it and it helps to keep the dirt out. Item 3. I cut and made the hole bigger in the bottom of the holster, so that the light and sens adjustor are exposed and can be use without taking off the holster. I keep the holster on the unit when I use mine. It acts as a cover and protects the unit and the switch from dirt and mud. After cutting a bigger hole, I glued the two raw edges around the hole together or you can sew them. Item 4. I place a small piece of blue masking tape of the small speaker hole to heep dirt out. Tape does not lessen the sound. These items are cheap and help protect the unit. This is the link to the Harbor Freight Centec unit http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97245Last edited on Fri Aug 7th, 2009 02:35 pm by tkcenterline

I have a Garrett, and Fisher pinpointers... Tried to give the Fisher away...Has been modded, with a switch on the side. Very little sensitivity compared to the Garrett. Put it up for free, guy in Canada wanted it. We didn't think it worth the cross the border shipping. So, it's still gathering dust until I pitch it.. Cordially Nad
