A friend has been having trouble ground balancing the depth multiplier coils on his 2500 and asked me to check it out for him. I took the 2500 out this morning while it was cool with the 9.5" imaging coil on it and searched a lot of my back yard. I found a lot of targets since it has never been hunted before. I dug a few that registered as coins and they were.
After that I attached the depth multiplier coils and went over the same area with it again. The first thing that I detected was my trash burning 55gal drum, in fact I detected it until I got about 6 or 8 ft feet from it. Out of range of the drum it found a strong signal that I could hear anywhere within about a 3 foot circle. I pressed the pinpoint button and it took me right to the center of the circle and I dug up a 12 oz can. I assume from this that it would have found the can at about 18 or so inches deep. It takes more than a coin sized chunk of metal to set it off but you get a solid signal when it does. I lowered the sensitivity down to 4 and it still found my trash barrell and the can. I cranked it back to 7 for the rest of my testing, I think I could have set it higher. I could barely hear the no-target tone.
I was able to walk right down a 10-3 wire running to my shop that I buried a few years ago and I got a lot of signals that would have been too much work to dig. It appears that it extends your detector depth from about where the largest coil (12.5" imaging) that I had to work with, quits finding stuff down to who knows how deep. I didn't touch the ground balance, it couldn't have been set any better.
It is possible to connect the coils incorrectly and to also mount the rear coil upside down. The little manual that comes with the coils clearly describes how to assemble them correctly but, if you didn't read the manual it would be easy to get it wrong. I can't help but wonder if this might be the source of his problems with ground balance. I didn't want to connect it incorrectly to see what happened. I am going out with him Sunday to the place where he had the problem and watch him put it together.
I loved working with it but I don't know what use I would have for it. It worked perfectly. It only runs in the all-metal mode which is automatically selected when you hook the coils to it. It just gives you another function for a machine that already has more options than any other one I know of. This detector doesn't have the new chip in it and is about a year old. I know a lot more about my back yard now than I did earlier this morning and had fun doing it. It would be informative to do a full blown test of this very ineresting combination.
I just wrote this for anyone who is curious about it like I was.....thanks...Len

| Nice report on the depth mul., I to have no use for one at present. But it was good to hear that it will work on a 2500 without the new chip (that's my machine now - waiting until winter, send it back for chip then). Mack
