Hello all,
As I narrow my metal detector purchasing decision, it dawned on me that I have really no idea what criteria to base performance on. After all, I want a unit that will produce decent results...does anyone have any performance criteria they can share? Perhaps maximum depth a unit can detect an object? The size of coil? Any help would be greatly appreciated in regards to this.
Thanks,
Scott

I am new to MD'ing and have had my ML Safari less than a week. I think the performance criteria will vary depending on what and where you intend to detect. Here is what I used to select my detector:
1. Being my first detector, I set a budget of $1,000.
2. I looked for a machine that I could use at the beach, in shallow water and inland.
3. It had to be simple to use, I had only read about Frequencies, Sensitivity, Threshold, Ground Balancing, Target ID'ing, Audio tones, Discrimination and Display. I wanted a detector that had some preset modes that I could change as I learned about each.
4. The detector had to be able to detect targets 8-12" deep.
5. In reading about the different technologies I felt the VLF Multiple Frequency best suited what I was looking for.
6. I also wanted an LCD screen which provided me target depth and possible Target ID.
7. I looked for one that had auto ground balancing. One thing less a newbie had to worry about.
I have only used it in my backyard (set on the coin/jewelry mode) for an hour or so and have dug 6 targets. 4 were dry holes and 2 produced a wheaty at about 6" and a dime at 4". As I use head phones I am going to custon set a mode reducing Threshold and Cross Save with relic mode. This should better help me ID target.

One other thing to consider.
It's ok saying you want a machine to go deeper,
but most experienced detectorists will tell you that the majority of targets are in the first 6 inches. This is true. Although you will find an occasional target (coin sized) at 12-14 inches with most mid ranged machines.
Always something to bear in mind.
Even watching youtube you'll see many Minelabs and other makes pickin' up many coins under 6 inches.

Depth is so hard to say regardless of claims by different companies. A lot is dependant on type of soil mineralization, size of coils used, and whether you use headphones or not. It depends on if your hunting in the summer in very hard packed dirt,or after a good rain has soaked the ground. How long the items have been in the ground and etc.The amount of time you have used a detector also comes into play a little.I have used many brands, and many of the detectors of many brands. If I had to pick just one detector to recommend to someone it would be Garret's ATPRO.it's waterproof up to 10 feet, and can find most any metallic objects. It's fairly easy to use and has a novice settings as well as advanced settings. Also it's price is under $600 and yet compares with most detectors selling for over a thousand dollars. It's lighter than most comparable detectors with all it's functions, and is backed with Garrett's customer service which is the best in the world.I sell Garrett's but I also sell other brands as well.Just my opinion and feel free to call me anytime at 972-775-8527
