I had a new experience yesterday; went detecting with a new friend at a park.  Both of my detectors (Tesoro Stingray II and Garrett Infinium LS) were purchased with beach and water hunting in mind.  (I SCUBA dive) This is the first time I have been hunting with someone using an imaging detector in a park; in past it was always a solitary venture so I had no basis for comparison and I don't remember the last time I tried a park... (I think I am starting to remember why.)

I don't typically use the disc on either machine other than to eliminate chatter and other noise and just resolved to dig all targets (hotels should give me a kick back considering how clean I leave their beaches.)  I learned yesterday that with park hunting, this is not an option.  My friend was using a higher end Whites with apparently excellent disc capability and was retrieving a coin on almost every dig (even occasional silver.)  I do realize that this also eliminates a lot of jewelery and other objects of value, but, in the interest of time and actually finding something of value, was a valid trade off.  Not too far into the hunt it also became apparent that the Stingray was not performing so I switched to the Infinium; Infinium is a wonderful machine for what it was designed for, but for trashy parking hunting, leave it in the truck and just walk around looking for coins on the surface; you will find more for your time.

[Checked out the Stingray after returning home.  It is broken and I am making preparations to send it in for service.  Will do another run with it when it comes back.  But, even when operating optimally, I don't ever recall being able to disc to the level and accuracy of my friends imaging machine.]

So, to make a short story long, if I were to get a machine primarily for discriminating in "trash parks", what are some good choices.  (I do lean towards Garrett if for no other reason than they are local and I can walk in for service if/when needed.)  If it were an underwater imaging VLF that would be great, but I am not aware of one (might be little much too, when diving and fiddling with so many controls.)

Any good suggestions?  I can read the "glossy fliers"on the websites, but nothing beats the advice, experience, sage wisdom of you guys out in the field using them...

Thanks
John

Your opening Pandora's box John, I try to stay out of "the best detector" question simply because there is a guy that I know that will switch detectors with you and still come out with more finds. He swings an E-trac but trades it off on occasion for any detector one of us are using . The reason I own an E-trac is because of the day he loaned me his detector.
But , it was the Spectra V3 that was (and probably still) band from coin rallies when it first came out. A little fact that other companies never speak of.
Most of my detecting is in the deep forest, so the perfect detector for me is a Prizm T6. But I keep a Coin Master ready to go at all times. On the other hand, the Fisher F75 keeps coming to mind, Most likely the next one I'll own.
I read the "glossy fliers" and wonder why the metal detector companies always "show Finds" instead of "comparison charts" for differences in sensitivities . I have made a recent count of over 180 different detectors an the market today, so I break it down to the Advertisers at the top of this board.

Camo, thanks for your reply and your concern. I have to admit, I had not expected quit this level of constraint...

I checked out some of those machines you mentioned. The V3i and E-trac got my attention but the Coinmaster is probably more in line with my budgetary constraint (aka wife.)  (Kind of interested in the Garrett AT (budget again) but the reviews are all over the spectrum.)  I suppose I'll just continue the research by reading back articles on the forums.  Too, once I get the Stingray back from Tesoro, I may be OK; it was interesting though watching my friend dig so many coins and so little trash. I understand now, why I would occasionally hit a beach with nothing but trash, and really deep corroded coins and stuff.

BTW, I definitely agree with what you were saying regarding skill; have always been a firm believer that an old pro with an old machine will run circles around a newby with a new machine...
