:music: How do Rat phones and Sun Ray Pro Golds compare with each other? I have heard great things about both.

Hay Shadow,

If you can hear, you're deffinitely missing out.

I know that with a Tejon, you need good ones.

I got a free set of Whites with a Garrett GTXa 500.

I thanked the guy for the good headphones he threw in.

He said " those aren't any good, there just free ".

He was right. I can do better with $20 at Radio Shack.

Just cheep stereo headphones is all I got.

The fact that they had volume ment little when I could get

volume for $20 at Radio Shack.

So I got a cheep $60 set. They were cordless. That's neat.

But I still had just a cheep set of stereo headphones.

I had to buy adapters and stuff to make it work right.

To make this shorter.

I spent more than my Killer B's cost and still had to spend more.

If you get quality phones, you don't need anything els.

If they break send them in and they come back good as new.

I know. I stood on my cord and stood up. That pulled the cord

too hard.

I sent them in and bought a set of Gray Ghost cause I couldn't do

with out good head phones once I new better.

The Killer B's were back before the dealer could send me the

Gray Ghost.

Killer B's are great. Great service also. Life time warranty.

Whites will work for listening to the BG"s or the Beatles, but

not metal detecting.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

I've used the Gray Ghost's, Sunray Pro Gold, KillerB's Ultimate, Timberwolve's and Koss UR30's. Of all of them, I think that the Sunray Pro Gold and the KillerB's offer the highest volume and the clearest sound. I thought that Gray Ghost's sounded kind of muffled. Havn't tried the Rat Phones but have heard that they sound muffled too. Not sure whether they were referring to the older or newer model Rat Phones though.

I use Detector Pro Headphones :music:. I use to think that no headphones would work for me. Then I found out that in my old age I was losing my hearing. Once I was fitted with hearing aids. I started hearing things I hadn't heard in years, Like birds singing and my Wife talking to me:shock:.

That is really a hard question to answer because of the personal likes and dislikes.
If you look at the 2 sets of headphones from a purely scientific viewpoint, nothing will beat the RaTphones either in audio reproduction or quality of construction. With that said, it goes to the preferences of the individual based on comfort, quality perceptions, and hearing ability or inability... Some of the cheaper headphones do an excellent job while for others they may be more demanding... Personally I need something like the Pros or RaTphones because of my hearing loss but  truthfully it is like buying a car.  Everybody buys for different reasons but in reality, all simply take you from point A to point B... Thanks Richard

Tseeker, it'll also depend on what detector you put em on. Some are better matches than others.
What I did was take my detector to a couple of hunting friends and tried different phones with it. I was amazed how much different each one sounded.
I think the Rat's sounded best with my Sov. but Nugget Busters fit me better...felt more comfortable to me. I thought the cups on the Rat's and the Ghosts were too shallow, my ears rubed on the gaurd inside the phones and that just wouldn't last too long.

I do know the guy with the Rats finds more gold than I do and I find more silver than he does...because of or in spite of the phones???:110:

Z I wasn't trying to turn anyone off of any brand or type, just saying if your gonna fork up the bucks on a good set of head phones, and I think you should, there's gotta be a way to hear em before you buy em.
the Rats didn't fit me as well as the busters do but I still want a set...but it sounds like I'm a bit like you with my toys. In the last three years I've had four detector, three left now, two sand scoops  and two sets of phones. One cheepy set that's my backup and the nuget busters.

Hi everyone, I'm a rookie so please bear with me.  Just how important is it to use headphones?  Should I pay more attention to the headphones or the display.  I have a White's Prizm 6T which I am learning, and I am sending for a pair of Killer B's, since you all talk so highly of them. Any advice?  :music:

the headphones let you hear the deep signals and coins on their side a lot better than the speaker. you will find much more with them than without them.

Thanks.  I lost the bid on the Killer B's on ebay, but I still want to get a pair. I read so much about them in the forum, they must be really good. Thanks again for responding.   :D

Welcome Rick to the forum.. Headphones will help batteries last longer and if you get a good pair of phones the back ground noise will not be so distracting. If money is tight go to radio shack/walmart/target and get a cheap pair with inline volume control on them. I got a pair from walmart yesterday for $4.88 with volume control for back up, rainy days and keep them in the trunk of the car. I use Black widows. Really like them, just my opinion.

I used cheap ones for years and found a lot of stuff. But once you use a good pair you will not go back to the cheap ones.......Z

Thanks Zeekeys, I'll do just that.  Eventually I would like some Killer B's, I'll take a look at the Black Widows, too. Some cheapies wil help me get started using headphones for now.

Sorry, but I have one more lame question.  If I buy a cheap set of headphones to start out with, do they have to be made specifically for metal detectors or will any do?
