Hi Rick
Not a lame question. When first starting out in md'ing it is mind blowing. There is so much to grab on to and you want to know it all. Just relax and things will flow in. Just relax and have fun other wise you could get overwhelmed.
I have used sony walkman phones that came with my walkman, some that came with my cd player, phones from am/fm radio. Always get a pair with a inline volume control that way if your detector has low volume you can adjust volume. You can also get a volume control from Radio Shack for about $7 but that makes the cord from the phones to the detector about 7 or 8 inches longer. Maybe too long then, maybe, maybe not. Some detectors need a little different kind of headphones. But don't worry about that because your detector should work with any headphones.
Personally I like the headphones PRO 35A or newer models from Radio Shack made by Koss. When on sale you can get them for $20. They have inline volume control and I still have the first pair I bought about 15 years ago. The sand is in the volume control and kind of hard to adjust sound but still working great.

I got the Black Widows about 2 years ago and use them a lot of the time. When hot or rainy I use the Pro 35 phones. Hope this helps Rick.... Jerry/Z

Thanks so much for the info and encouragement. You are right, I didn't realize so much was envolved in MDetecting. I am going to take your advice today so I will be ready for my trip down the road to Galveston tomorrow.

Hey Jerry,
Just to let you know, I went to Radio Shack and got a pair of full sized no name headphones. Now I am ready for a day in Galveston. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Well everyone, Can't wait to tell you about my day. I got up early, loaded my cooler, umbrella, camera, headphones....you would have though I was moving out. Drove about 50 miles to San Luis Pass in the extreme west end of Galveston Island. That was when I noticed I had loaded everything BUT my metal detector! It gets better....I got stuck in the sand, really deep. Fortunately a guy with 4WD came by and I offered him $10 bucks to pull me out. After which I realized reverse had gone out in my transmission. Checked fluid, it was full, on the way home drive started going out. I am waiting at home now for the tow truck. Looks like it will be next week before I can go back. I guess it could have been worse....somehow. Will let you know how my next adventure turns out.

Hay Rick wow what a day. You better get a lottery ticket. With the day you are having nothing to do but go up and you might as well have a $200 million lottery ticket in your pocket...
So sorry to hear your troubles. I hope everything works out fine with your car. I think I would say maybe the gods are saying I shouldn't do this metal detecting. If these are the hurtles you must over come and still stay with metal detecting you will be in for the long haul for sure.
Those are the kind of days that one says I don't know why I am doing this metal detecting stuff? I come home exhausted, every bone and muscle is hurting and sore, sun burnt, dirty, ears ringing and I only have 6 coins after 5 hours of hunting. When you really think about it, why do you do it? I don't know why but I am jumping out of bed early and ready to get out there again and start all over. Crazy hay????
My wife still questions my sanity about this metal detecting thing. .. Jerry

Hey Zeekeys,
I guess it's like a job you love even though it doesn't pay much, you just love it. I'm not going to let this stop me. I'm going to stay with it 'til the bitter end. Interesting idea about the lottery ticket. But with the way my luck is today, I might end up OWING the State $10,000,000.

Good attitude Rick. I love life and I retired in 2000 from the city bus company. Took a van driver job for the hospital for 7 years and just got laid off. So this is the second summer I have been off since retirement. Really enjoying just getting up and going detecting every day.
I came back to detecting 4 years ago and it is the main part of my life now. I sure get a lot of exercise walking on the sand for hours at a time. I haven't been this good of shape for decades. As a bus driver I never got much exercise.
Oh plug in those headphones and see if they will work on your detector.
Here is this am hunt on the beach.... Jerry

I use the Sun Ray Pro Golds and really like them. I can adjust the volume for both ears.
I can't believe guys who hunt without using headsets. You can hear those really weak signals so much better.
The best thing about using a headset is You Don't Bother Others, while you detecting.
I broke a wire on my Sun Ray headset, sent it back in and had it back in a week, NO CHARGE!!!

Thanks Ringfinder,
I had never really thought about weak signals because I was having trouble interpreting the ones I was getting. But I do have a pair now and plan on using them the next time out.

And you don't draw as much attention every time you hit a target.
We get watched enough, kind of makes me nervous sometimes when I hit a good one, we don't need to report a find out loud on top of it....but than I am speaking from a beach hunters perspective.

Hunting on the beach is where you really need a headset. People hate it when guys go around detecting and making all those beep, beep, beep sounds. They hate it and it make our hobby look bad.
I also like to wear headsets to keep the kids away. I always laugh when kids come up to me and say something like what did you find mister, I ignore them and finally ones says, he can't hear you, he has a headset on. Yeah Right, I can hear them but chose not too.
Wear a Headset for all the RIGHT Reasons.
