Hay Wonderer,

That sounds awsome. I'd love ta try one on those foldin shovels.

I'm still usin my light shovel. Tha handle broke on one and I replaced it.

Now it hangs in my belt loop better. I don't ware a belt after my last

surgery. I ware suspenders now. Now I have healed more and can squat.

I have fashioned my own hand digger. I like it better than any hand digger

I have used. It's made from a 15" long Craftsman 1/2" breaker bar.

That can was 8" deep.

They never even new old Tab was diggen up their soccer field..lol
Happy Huntin,

Tabdog,

Man that is one sweet digger you made, don't think you'll ever break it.........:049:Good modification to the shovel to...

Looks like good pinpointing is a must..

The folding shovels are expensive, but I consider it a lifetime investment...+ when I was prospecting trash was deep (ML 3500) & the soil was like concrete..I have another shovel (made by preditor), that is narrow an pointed which is better for use with my VLF's...had to make a aluminum sheath to protect things from the sharp digging edges & used a hard drive super magnet to hold it on...

Wish I could post pictures but my computor is on its last leg..can receive e-mail but can't send one + can't post pictures..To cheep to buy a new one or to broke buying toys!

You rule TD:061::061::061: wonderer

Hey guys!

I've been using a hunting knife from Harbor Freight as my main tool to cut a vee in the sod.  From there I slice underneath and roll the sod back.

For digging I like to use a spagetti spoon, the kind with teeth.  Alternately I use a soup spoon.  Both of these impliments are plastic or hard poly something or other that I buy at the dollar store.  I always loosen the soil with the knife first, being careful not to scratch the target.

I have concentrated on leaving no trace of my intrusion and am getting pretty good at it.  Putting the soil on a cloth and then returning it to the hole, I simply roll the sod back and step on it.

But I do dig a hole that is larger than necessary with these tools.  I gotta make me one of those slim diggers.  It would definitely help in rocky hard soils.

Thanks for the tip, Tabdog.

I bought two GI folding shovels off Ebay. Total cost of the two were about $45.00+ They are the same kind that I was issued when I was in the army. I found out in nam that in dry sand it will wear you out digging a foxhole. But,.........I don't have to dig foxholes any more, Just pulltabs. Ha ha haaaaaaaaa.

Try one. they are tough. Tried a coleman folding shovel, but it a piece of crap for metal detecting.

The digger Goes4ever refers to is a Friskers garden knife. I happened on to one in the Spring of 2007. I found it at Menards on sale for $2.99. I liked it so well that I went back and bought two more. After two years of abuse, I retired the first one this spring, because the hand grip was coming loose. So I kept it in the garage for use around the house, used it to cut out a new flower bed and other projects. I pulled the second one out and broke it on my third target, the first morning I used it. I got the third knife out and broke it within the first hour. So I have been using the original one again this entire season.

All three were identical. Some are just made better than others.

"Life is like a box of chocolates, you nver know what your gonna get."

Take care all, Dave

Heavy duty for sure... For the hunting I do in parks and such I use a thin all aluminum digger. But near roots its useless. Now that its getting cooler I think I might hit some woods and try my luck there... although there is not much worth searching. I did find a neat site butjust about everything there is paved over now...:143:
